Not with hindsight not because, little did she know, that in years to come she would be the recipient of a literary award presented by Seuss himself, but because he was, in essence, like a breath of fresh air. She remembers the day that Dr Seuss entered her world well. The only child of Scotsman Matthew Weeks, a well-respected forestry worker in the North Island, and New Zealand-born Elizabeth Weeks, Lynley grew up in remote forestry settlements and admits “there wasn’t a great deal of entertainment – in fact there wasn’t any – so we made our own”. The world today is a starkly different place to the one Dame Lynley was born into. As one of New Zealand’s most beloved and celebrated authors, Dame Lynley Dodd offers invaluable insights we would all be better off for soaking up. The third in the Mitch Rapp series, this was a much slower novel. The pacing also seemed really off and the final act was rushed incredibly. I also think there was a case of “too many cooks” on Irans side. I found myself struggling to finish the book. This is the book where Irene Kennedy gets captured and while it should be a book that is great reading and seeing Rapp out for revenge – I think it came a little too soon after he did the same for Anna. I wish I could remember my original opinion of it but on a re-read it seemed rather forced. It’s been 3 years since The Last Man came out and my memory of the series is a bit hazy. I also felt that it would help me judge the Kyle Mills book more after I fully reacquaint myself with Mitch Rapp. With the resurrection of the Mitch Rapp series of novels thanks to Kyle Mills, I thought now would be an excellent time to go through the Mitch Rapp series, re-read them and rank them in order. The result is an uproarious social commentary that conveys the true glory of Britain, from the satiric pen of an unapologetic Anglophile. Veering from the ludicrous to the endearing and back again, Notes from a Small Island is a delightfully irreverent jaunt around the unparalleled floating nation that has produced zebra crossings, Shakespeare, Twiggie Winkie's Farm, and places with names like Farleigh Wallop and Titsey. ("I had recently read," Bryson writes, "that 3.7 million Americans believed that they had been abducted by aliens at one time or another, so it was clear that my people needed me.") But before departing, he set out on a grand farewell tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. "Suddenly, in the space of a moment, I realized what it was that I loved about Britain-which is to say, all of it."Īfter nearly two decades spent on British soil, Bill Bryson - bestselling author of The Mother Tongue and Made in America-decided to return to the United States. True, its not very gruesome or gory, but the foul language and subtle references tend to stand out if you are paying attention. There are swears, violence, and sexual abuse, so this book is not for the weak of heart. Its no surprise that this book is mature, as seen from my previous reviews. America, is a young adult, who is lost in the world, and doesn't believe he is good enough to be found anymore, as throughout his life he has been struggling to find his place in the world. Its good, but it starts off slow, so you must have patience while reading. Its true plot is never said flat out, but instead subtly told to the reader as you explore the memories of a young boy named America, who thinks he isn't worth finding. The premise of this book is hard to explain. America is a deep, amazing book with an unapologetic view of this world full of hate, pain, and sadness, as we cling to the short lives we have the pleasure of having. Struggling to be someone important, whether it to someone, or even to be important to themselves. Being alive is probably one of the most rewarding, and painful things on this earth. That’s not because it’s not good or that it’s bad. It’s not really the kind of book worthy of an in-depth review here. That said, one of the more recent titles I’ve finished is Kayla Cagan’s debut Piper Perish. And while that’s been nice, I do miss sinking into a book and hope when this month of travel and talking - which I’ve loved! - comes to an end, I can curl up with a pile of novels. I’ve picked up some light reading, the kind of self-help/self-comfort stuff that’s primarily list-based, with no narrative structure, that’s given me the freedom to bounce around. I was going at a really fast speed for the first couple of months of the year, but as soon as March hit, it’s almost like everything in my life decided to grind to a halt. I’ve found myself slowing down in my reading. After last week’s non-stop fun, let’s take this week to recalibrate.
